ADDITIONAL MICHIGAN UNEMPLOYMENT INFORMATION
This article pertains to what I know at this time regarding Michigan Unemployment, if you live in another state you will need to contact your state’s UIA office directly.
As far as UIA I see 3 groups of people:
- Employees that have been receiving a W-2—very normal process, create an account at MIWAM and report for whom you worked for even if it is your own company.
- Self Employed (1099 individual or LLC entity)—previously never allowed into UIA. These individuals will be covered under a new program called PUA (Pandemic Unemployment Assistance).
- Owner of a Corporation that has NOT taken payroll in the past—I am truly unsure if you are eligible and have no guidance at this time regarding your ability to collect UIA. Check back often for updates.
Here’s a few bullet points from the UIA website:
- Every employee in Michigan who applies for unemployment benefits will receive them, if eligible.
- Impacted employees have 28 days from the date of their work stoppage to apply for benefits.
- Approved claims will be back-dated to reflect the date in which a claimant was laid-off or let go from their job due to COVID-19.
- Benefits have been expanded to 39 weeks.
Important notes about the CARES Act and employees who have already filed a claim:
- You do not need to reapply to receive the additional benefits provided by the CARES Act.
- If your file has been denied in the past three weeks, there is no need to reapply at this time. The Agency will review these claims for eligibility.
